Thomas Flake has spent more than three decades building and operating mission-critical communications, compute, and power infrastructure. His career spans four telecom switching tandems, more than 110 central offices, and data centers supporting commercial enterprises, NASA’s Langley Research Center, and Naval Special Warfare — more than 120 critical communications and compute facilities in total.
He later co-founded Bcause, where he designed and operated a 50 MW, 18,000-computer cryptocurrency mining data center within an 84 MW-capable Virginia Beach facility described at launch as the largest of its kind in North America. As an owner and operator, Flake carried the power, uptime, hardware, and market economics on his own balance sheet through a full cryptocurrency market cycle.
That operating experience became the foundation of ISS Mining’s power-first approach to AI infrastructure. As Founder and Managing Partner, Flake leads the assembly, engineering and commercial structuring of hyperscale data-center campuses integrating land, natural gas, behind-the-meter generation, grid interconnection, water and fiber. ISS's multi-state portfolio now encompasses tens of thousands of acres and more than 10 GW of identified grid and behind-the-meter generation pathways. Flake is currently leading more than $1.5 billion of powered-land and data-center transactions completed, under agreement, at LOI stage, or in advanced negotiation.
A U.S. Navy nuclear veteran, Flake has raised and structured more than $150 million across telecommunications and blockchain ventures, founded Picus, a competitive local exchange carrier, led the Peninsula Technology Incubator, and served as a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt supporting Naval Special Warfare. He holds an MBA from William & Mary.
